US students can also apply for a private education loan such as the Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan. These loans offer competitive rates, in-school repayment options and other borrower benefits such as rewards and interest rate reductions. Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Law Financial Aid

US students studying Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Law are eligible to apply for Federal Direct Loans for each of their academic years. As Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Law are considered a professional degree, most students are eligible to borrow Federal Direct Unsubsidized (Stafford) Loans at the Graduate/Professional level ($20,500 per year), provided the student has already completed at least three years of college/university

Students who have completed fewer than three years at the undergraduate level, are eligible for Federal Direct Subsidized Loans (see below). For specific information, visit the Federal Direct Loans website.

NOTE: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Dublin) – Dentistry does not participate in the US Federal Direct Loan program.

Additional financing for US students studying at UCC, UCD, UG, TCD, RCSI, UL and QUB can be secured through the US Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate/Professional level students. Students can borrow up to the full cost of their education (less any other Federal Direct Loan amounts) using the PLUS Loan. Costs include tuition, accommodation, travel, books, living expenses, etc. Students can apply for the PLUS Loan on their own signature (independent of their parents) provided they have already completed three years of college/university. For specific information, visit the Federal Direct PLUS Loans website.

NOTE: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Dublin) – Dentistry does not participate in the US Federal Direct Loan program.

Parents of students with fewer than three years of college/university prior to commencing medical school can avail of the Federal Direct PLUS Loan on behalf of their son or daughter. Parents can borrow up to the full cost of education (less any other Federal Direct Loan amounts). Once the student has completed three years of college (including medical school) the student can then avail of the Federal Direct Loan and the Federal Direct PLUS Loan on their own signature.
