Why Ireland? Is a question I have been asked by many, let me take a few moments and explain what the real question should be, why not Ireland? From the scenic landscapes to the amazing hospitality, the country of Ireland does a wonderful job of making you feel at home. It has a vibrant culture full of music and food but is also home to numerous world-renowned universities.

Studying abroad has added another dimension to my medical education. This unique opportunity enabled me to compare and contrast medicine in North America from that in Ireland and Europe, allowing me to gain a greater appreciation for medicine globally. Choosing to study abroad can prove to be quite challenging since many students are concerned about their journey of coming home. The education at University College of Cork (UCC) has been phenomenal and while the expectations are high there are a variety of support systems in place to help you pave your path to success. The professors are experts in their fields and majority of them are focused on the professional education and growth of their students. From my experience the university not only prepares you to apply for competitive residencies, but it provides you the tools to succeed in these programs once you’re back at home.

While at UCC I have been fortunate enough to be involved in life outside the classroom. The university encourages students to join extra-curriculars. There are numerous clubs and societies present on campus and there is definitely something to peak your interest. Last year I co-founded UCC Paediatrics, a sub-society of MedSoc, along with a couple of my classmates. We have put on events such as workshops, trivia nights, and our Christmas event, Shoebox Appeal, partnered with Team Hope. I am also the Graduate Entry Medicine Representative for UCC’s General Practitioner Society. I work with the committee to organize and run our events and also act as a liaison between the society and the Graduate Entry Student body. Being involved in these societies helps me to explore medicine through a different avenue while also allowing me to socialize with my peers.

If you’re like me and need a break from studying, there is tons to do in Cork. You can choose between finding a bar with unbelievable live music, to roaming the English Market for tasty treats. The city has a lot to offer and the locals are very warm and friendly.
