Q:

What type of students proves to be successful applicants?

A: All types.  The Atlantic Bridge Program is a cultural diversity scheme that is designed to add well-qualified students from a mosaic of backgrounds to the university's student body.  Students of all ages, nationalities, college majors, ethnicities, financial resources, etc., are encouraged to apply.
 

 

Q: How many North American students are admitted each year?
A: There are up to thirty North American students are admitted annually.

Q: Are the veterinary degrees awarded by University College Dublin recognized in the United States and Canada?
A: Absolutely.  Furthermore, hundreds of UCD veterinary graduates are currently practicing and / or teaching veterinary medicine in North America.
 
Q: Will I be able to practice veterinary medicine in the United States / Canada following graduation from University College Dublin veterinary school?
A: The veterinary degrees awarded by University College Dublin are recognized by the veterinary licensing authorities in the United States and Canada.  It is important to note that University College Dublin is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).  Graduates are eligible to practice in all of the European Union nations, in all British Commonwealth nations and territories and in the United States and Canada following successful completion of the applicable licensing procedures.
 
Q: How long is the veterinary degree course?
A: The Veterinary Medicine (Graduate Entry) Degree course is four years in length.  UCD also offer a five year undergraduate veterinary degree.
     
Q: How many entering classes are there each year and when do classes commence?
A: There is one entering class each year.  Classes begin annually in September.
     
Q: How much are tuition fees?
A: Tuition fees for the 2011/12 academic year are €33,500 (Euros). Tuition fees are subject to annual review.
     
Q: How much should I budget for living expenses?
A: It has been our experience that, on average, students will spend approximately €16,000 (Euros) per year on living expenses (rent, food, supplies, travel, books, etc.).  Most of these expenses can be funded through US student loans or Canadian lines of credit. 
     
Q: What kind of financial aid is available?
A: Financial aid in the form of US and Canadian student loans are available to cover education expenses such as tuition fees, books and supplies, travel, etc. Unfortunately, at the present time UCD does not offer scholarships to international students.
     
Q: Are student accommodations available?
A: Yes, University College Dublin has excellent, modern on-campus housing.  Housing in the private sector, including housing for married couples, may also be located with guidance from the university’s Student Accommodation or International Office.
     
Q: What about libraries and computer facilities?
A: The libraries at UCD are amongst the most extensive in Europe.  They provide a wide range of facilities and services to support and complement lectures, tutorials and practical work.  Document supply services, database searching, a comprehensive variety of reference works and expert advice on how to use them are all readily available.  Extensive computer facilities (with Internet access and Wi-Fi) are also available to students.
     
Q: What about health insurance?
A: Ireland has a public / private system of health care.  Private health insurance is required for all international students and they should be prepared to provide evidence of that insurance upon arrival in Ireland.  A popular choice for Ireland health insurance is VHI, although there are several other companies available.
     
Q: May I obtain employment while I am studying in Ireland and do I need a visa before traveling?

Q: Who can my family and friends contact if they want to receive information on traveling to Ireland to visit me?
A: The Irish Tourist board at 1-800-223-6470, or visit www.ireland.ie.  Most of the major air carriers have daily scheduled flights to and from Ireland.  You could also check with your preferred airline or travel agent.
     
Q: Are there any special airfares available to students studying in Ireland?
A:

Yes, the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) offers special student airfares to students who are attending programs overseas. CIEE has offices throughout the USA and Canada through which travel arrangements can be made to and from Europe, North America and the rest of the world.  For details on their office nearest you call 1-800-781-4040 or visit www.statravel.com.
