Q:

Do Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork have a website?

Q: What types of students prove to be successful applicants?
A: All types. The Atlantic Bridge Program is a cultural diversity scheme that is designed to add well-qualified students of diverse backgrounds to the university's student body. Students of all ages, nationalities, college majors, ethnicities, financial resources, etc., are encouraged to apply.
   
Q: How many North American students are admitted each year?
A: Up to a dozen North American students are admitted annually.
   
Q: What are the minimum application requirements?
A: Applicants from the USA and Canada must have (i) completed a bachelor's degree by September 1st of the year of proposed entry (ii) completed college-level courses in biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics by the same date. There is no minimum GPA requirement.

Q: Are the dental degrees awarded by Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork recognized in the United States and Canada?
A: Yes. However, all licensing procedures for the desired state/province must also be met.
     
Q: Will I be able to practice dentistry in the United States/Canada following graduation from an Irish dental school?
A: The dental degrees awarded by Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork are recognized by the dental licensing authorities in the United States and Canada. Graduates are eligible to practice in all of the European Union nations, in all British Commonwealth nations and territories and in the United States and Canada. However you should check with your national and state/provincial licensing authorities for specific details on applicable licensing procedures and/or additional training that may be required of foreign-trained dentists.
     
Q: How many entering classes are there each year and when do classes commence?
A: There is one entering class each year. Classes commence annually in September.
     
Q: How long is the dental degree course?
A: Five years of study is required to complete the dental degree course.
     
Q: Is student accommodation available?
A: Yes, both University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin have excellent, modern, on-campus housing. International students who have received letters of admission are guaranteed university housing (provided that their housing applications are received on time). Housing in the private sector, including housing for married couples, may also be located with assistance from the college's student accommodation office.
     
Q: What about libraries and computer facilities?
A: The libraries at both universities are extensive. The libraries provide a range of facilities and services to support and complement lectures, tutorials and practical work. Document supply services, database searching, a comprehensive range of reference works and expert advice on how to use them are all readily available. Extensive and modern computer facilities (with access to the Internet) are also available to students.
     
Q: What about health insurance?
A: Ireland has a public/private system of health care. Private health insurance is advised, but is not mandatory, for all international students. A popular choice for Ireland health insurance is VHI, though there are several companies available.
     
Q: How much are tuition fees?
A: Tuition fees are approximately 27,000 Euros. Tuition fees are subject to annual review.
     
Q: How much should I budget for living expenses?
A: It has been our experience that, on average, students will spend approximately US$ 15,000 per year on living expenses (rent, food, supplies, travel, etc.). These expenses may be financed through financial aid.
     
Q: What kind of financial aid is available?
A: Financial aid in the form of US and Canadian student loans are available to cover education expenses such as tuition fees, books and supplies, travel, etc. Currently, the Irish universities do not offer scholarships to international students.
     
Q: May I obtain employment while I am studying in Ireland?
A: If you enter Ireland in order to undertake a full-time course of study you would be permitted to work only after obtaining a work permit from the government. It is NOT advisable for students who are studying dentistry to work during their school sessions as the course load is so exacting.
Spouses of students who are attending university in Ireland may obtain employment upon being granted a work permit.
     
Q: Do I need to obtain a visa before I travel to Ireland?
A:

Citizens of the USA and Canada who hold valid passports do NOT need a visa to enter Ireland.
Nationals of countries other than the USA and Canada should contact their nearest Irish Embassy before making their travel arrangements to determine whether or not a visa is required.

     
Q: Who can my family and friends contact if they want to receive information on traveling to Ireland to visit me?

Q: Are there any special airfares available to students studying in Ireland?
A: Yes, the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) offers special student airfares to students who are studying overseas. CIEE has offices throughout the USA and Canada through which travel arrangements can be made to and from Europe, North America and the rest of the world.
